If I were to fall over suddenly, I hope it would be between the Chardonnay barrels and the Cabs. That way maybe my ghost would hang around. The greatest of times are often experienced in the midst of adversity. This is certainly true of the rained out grilling picnic. Relentless determination is all that is required to overcome the evil disappointment of moisture and move the party inside. Annnnnd they're off...... what is the definition of an athlete? Come on...weigh in on this one. A track star, a ballerina, football player, maybe a bowler. Has anyone ever considered a jockey? Looking at this finely tuned hunk of flesh will only fuel the debate. A good day at the track is.... well? Better than a sharp stick in the eye I think or something like that. Only about 16 miles from Jefferson, Texas is the Five D's Steakhouse. There are only 467 People that live in Avinger and most of the them work at the steakhouse. If you ever get to Jefferson be sure and make the trip. The salad is killer...Honest. Miles

In Laramie Wyoming there is a one of the oldest salons and parlors in the American West. The Buckhorn Bar in Laramie has been around for a long time. It's bar stools have seen real gunslingers, senators, outlaws,, and the occasional tourist. If you're ever at the corner of Ivinson and 2nd in Laramie stop in for a brew and some conversation. You can tell alot about a person by their face. This face is about 9 feet by 9 feet. It's the roadside Sam Houston Statue on I-45 in Texas. They have a big visitors center and gift shop. I assume you can buy little Sam Houston's and even smaller Santa Anna dolls. As you might imagine it wasn't crowded. Sam Houston was the father of Texas Independence and Defeated Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto. NO CHARGE for the history lesson. Heading South to Texas didn't seem to work to escape the wet and cold. In fact the damp cold in Texas seems to chill a person to the bone. It was a gray day by any standard but it was still possible to warm up a bit with thoughts of sailing away to a warmer place in our memories. Mark Twain was right, "there ain't nothing a river ain't seen". In this case a lake but you get my drift....

The Indian market in Chichicastenango was a fabulous look into the past and present. There were thousands of indigenous folks all crammed into a few tight city blocks. The sea of rich Guatemalan colors overloaded your senses while the wafting smells of street food, incense, and humanity fought for control of the rest of you. The few tourists came late and left early heading back to Antigua leaving Chichi to relax and disassemble from the day. Scenes of children and old men carrying loads three times their body weight on ropes suspended from their foreheads are forever etched into my memory. Tomorrow it looks like the village of Nebaj in the highlands. More of Guatemala is waiting. Good night from the rooftop of the Hotel Chalet in Chichicastenango, Guatemala.

The outlines of Guatemala City, its people, and Pacaya Volcano in the distance. It was a wild ride with Hilberto in the mini van to Antigua. The Tres Volcanoes Hotel is clean and quaint with the real volcanoes just a short distance away. One "bolsa grande" of Ice from the super mercado down the street and we were set for the night. Immodium capsules "extra firm" at the ready by the bed. Good night to the rat race.
